Citizens Against Wal-Mart in Marina! is a volunteer group of residents, businesses and organizations who oppose Wal-Mart’s plans to open a store in or around Marina, Calif.

Call Wal-Mart California at 1-800-793-6522 (8:30 am to 5:30 pm) and tell them:
“Wal-Mart is NOT welcome anywhere in or around Marina, Calif. I will NEVER shop at a Wal-Mart in Marina.”

Why Wal-Mart Is Wrong for Marina

Wal-Mart’s planned site is the former Kmart building at Marina Landing Shopping Center. It is:
  • Less than a half-mile from Marina State Beach and protected dunes habitat
  • Surrounded on 3 sides by residential neighborhoods
  • The cornerstone of Marina’s tourism trade
  • Part of Marina’s downtown retail and business district

  • Next door to Marina’s long-awaited new library
  • Across the street from a protected vernal pond
  • Approx. 800 feet from Glorya Jean Tate Park
  • Approx. 1,750 feet from Olson Elementary School
  • Bordering Locke-Padden Park, one of Monterey County’s only protected wetlands

We Want Marina’s Vision for Marina Landing!

In 2005, Marina’s City Council, Planning Commission and citizens agreed we wanted 2 to 4 tenants occupying the former Kmart, along with smaller, resident- and visitor-serving, pedestrian-friendly retailers and businesses.
Wal-Mart derails Marina’s vision. An out-of-town developer bought the former Kmart building in October 2005. The developer signed a lease with Wal-Mart in February 2006 without telling anyone in Marina—even after the Planning Commission said in October they didn’t want Wal-Mart or any major discounter at Marina Landing.
It’s still our vision to have a unique center that serves our diverse community and our visitors.
